Homemade Garlic Hummus

I can't tell you the last time I purchased hummus from the grocery store. Making hummus at home is insanely easy and tastes just as delicious! Plus, I always prefer homemade anything to store bought because you know exactly the ingredients going into your meals!

You can spice up your hummus with roasted red peppers, steamed beets, cilantro, pesto, etc. This recipe is for a basic hummus to get you started!

You'll just need a few ingredients, a food processor or high power blender, and 10-15 minutes of your time!

The key to creaminess : skin your garbanzo beans! Taking the outer (thick layer) of skin off of your garbanzo beans will help soften your hummus to a better creamy consistency.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Low sodium garbanzo beans (or dry raw beans and cook them thoroughly)
  • Garlic
  • Olive Oil
  • Tahini
  • Cumin
  • Sea Salt
  • Lemon

Makes: 12 - 16 oz
Time: 10-15 minutes

Ingredients:
  • 1 can low sodium Garbanzo Beans (or 16 oz dry beans, cooked thoroughly)
  • 1 large garlic clove - minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup tahini (can be found in almost all grocery stores in the Oil or Nut Butter aisle)
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1/4 cup water (added in increments, as needed)
  • Sea Salt to taste (appx 1/2 - 1 tbsp)
Directions:
  1. I usually like to cook my garlic for a few minutes to remove the sharp spice / taste. Add garlic to dry skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes until brown
  2. Rinse and drain your beans. Next, peel your beans. Using your fingers or a paper towel, peel off the outer layer of each bean. This may sound time consuming, but the skin falls off pretty easily, so it shouldn't take more than 3-5 minutes
  3. In a large food processor, add beans, garlic, oil, tahini, and lemon
  4. Start to blend until creamy, add increments of water as needed if your mixture is too dry
  5. Add cumin and sea salt, and continue to blend until desired consistency (appx. 3-5 minutes)
